Bardo
A woman’s absurd portrait, through different possible versions of her life. Every new identity reveals, in different ways, the same traumas; yet she insists she wants to change. Will she ever escape herself?
Bardo is an intermediate, transitional, or liminal state between two lives on earth. According to the Tibetan philosophy, it is a transitional state of existence between death and rebirth, where consciousness, after the death of the physical body, wanders in a world consisting of dream projections and reflections until it finds a way to be reborn. The Ego is refracted until it loses and finds itself again in a new form. From life to death and then back to life. Every process of change or transition follows this cycle.
It is at this state, the attempt of change, where we find Maria Aliki, the heroine of this film, immersed in her complexes, dreams and expectations, trying to heal her wounds and dominate a reality that hurts her.
While travelling through the labyrinths of her mind, and trying to find what went wrong, the heroine, in order to find her voice, is constantly changing identities. Sometimes as a struggling lawyer, others as a stuntwoman or a troubled writer, Maria Aliki, mother, wife, daughter, professional, is determined to recognize and overcome her repressed traumas in order to face life head on, purified and conscious. This journey of self-discovery cannot be stopped by anyone, not even death.
